long the treacherous road towards adulthood, we all set personal goals to ourselves in order demonstrate that we can be self-reliant in regards to the development of our humans. They could be massive undertakings, such as taking the whole of Emile Zola's Rougon-Macquart cycle in order to comprehend the latter half of nineteenth century French social history. They can also be small in scope for instance, as for me, when I put a great deal of formative energy into looking for the uncut version of Sam Raimi's 1981 splat-tacular, The Evil Dead.

When I was a teen I owned (and loved) The 4 Front Video release of the film that was subject to various cuts as a result of an over-reaction to the BBFC's well-known moral panic about so-called "Video junkies". My memories of the damaged film's vividness and nostalgic, and I remember feeling that the person who cut the film were doing it in a way where the viewer would know that something tasty had removed. Like, the audio would suddenly go out of the sync and the continuity would stall for a split second. I would want more than anything to know what was between the cuts. I was a child variant of "Sicko" video. Perhaps I am still?

I'd like to think that director-writer Lee Cronin shared this experience, though even the case that he didn't It is clear from his latest movie Evil Dead Rise that he has studied the film at the molecular level. It's not a good idea to call this"a "franchise extension", it's a "reboot" or a delayed "sequel", as the film is more a reconstruction or a study or a remix from the source. The same story, as presented from a new, modern angle. It absolutely kills...

If there's one thing the Evil Dead has taught us, it's that we must do everything in our power to avoid intoning a mystical demonic incantation in the presence of the flesh-bound/blood-inked Book of the Dead, as very bad things will ensue. Here, Alyssa Sutherland's single-mom tattooist Elle is preparing to leave her old apartment building with her three children. A tremor uncovers an old, dusty basement vault, inside , encased in a paper and placed in a bug-infested graveyard is an old friend.

Cronin balances the set-up to mayhem equilibrium perfectly, laying out the delicate family dynamics while also introducing the wild-card aspect of the estranged daughter of Elle Beth (Lily Sullivan) and leaving the audience to wonder which sister will be one of the Ash characters in the film. This straightforward but extremely efficient set-up serves to underpin the second-half gore explosion , which is accompanied by a hint of pathos as well as one simple shot that occurs directly after one of the more visceral effects blow-outs that near brought a tear to my eye.

While there's a loving homage element to this film Cronin does not just try to replicate the hysterical dynamism and acrobatic camera actions that Raimi has made his famous. The murder of victims is carried out with a similar attention to details and the desire to give each victim a new canvas for some horrifying mutilation or another. In terms of tone,  Evil Dead Rise  is very similar to the original Evil Dead, in that it does not rely on the slapstick wigs that were featured in the second and third films, even though the absurdity of its humor shines in how ferociously OTT the entire film is.

The only criticism I have is the unnecessary and tacked-on epilogue and prologue, which seem like they've been put in place as a way to lay a path to a sequel. I suppose it's more a matter of Cronin becoming a sufferer of the success of others. The rest of the time, this is the exhilarating and cleansing sensation of allowing a bloody swell to slam into the reader. And it doesn't make you wish to revisit the original version to see what could have been but more as a way to test the depth and accuracy of the results Cronin and his team have created. It's like experiencing the full beauty of the version for the very first time, and I'm more complimentary than that.

The latest chapter in the Evil Dead saga is definitely an all-family affair However, until the Necronomicon is eliminated once and for all and for all, there will be very little of a family left. Fandango premiered a brand-new Evil Dead Rise video featuring Alyssa Sutherland's Ellie, not long after she falls victim to the book's curse , and turns into Deadite who murders. You can check out the video below via Twitter.

The video shows Ellie's twin sister Beth (Lily The Sullivan) finding her sibling in the kitchen, cooking up a not-so-nutritious breakfast by smashing eggs in a pan, with shells, and all. And if it's not enough to make Beth and her three children realize that something's amiss, the message is immediately clear when Ellie tells them about her vision of a perfect family get-together. But it's more violent than your typical walk through the woods and her speech is slurred, making it even more disturbing.
